['dɪstrɪkt, englisch, di'strikt, französisch] der, -s/-s, im angloamerikanischen und französischen Recht allgemeiner Verwaltungs- und Gerichtsbezirk; in den USA u. a. der Bezirk des Gerichts unterster Instanz (District court); in Großbritannien nach der Verwaltungsreform von 1974 (Local Government Act 1972) Verwaltungseinheit der Kommunalverwaltung unterhalb der County (Grafschaft), verwaltet von District councils oder Metropolitan District councils; in Frankreich Zusammenschluss mehrerer Communes desselben Raumes, um eine wirksamere Durchführung öffentlicher Aufgaben zu gewährleisten, besonders in Ballungsräumen als District urbain. Auch im schweizerischen Verwaltungsrecht dient für den »Amtsbezirk« als einer Untergliederung der Kantone für den französischen Sprachbereich die Bezeichnung District.
